The Hairball's controls are simple and easy to dial in.  The level knob controls the volume of the effect, and a three way switch provides several different fuzz modes including: bright, lifted, and dark.  Each setting has differnt characteristics.  Bright is loud and pounchy, Lifted has a more open sound, and Dark has pronounced compression and a slightly lower volume output.  The octave effect is present in all three modes.

The cat artwork is by the artist Lois Wain who was strangely obsessed with drawing anthropomorphized cats. This drawing in particular is said to illustrate the artist's advancing mental illness. His later cat drawings are nothing more than psychedelic geometric shapes, and it's speculated he suffered from schizophrenia.
